Itikaf – A Special Worship in Islam

Itikaf is one of the most sacred worship acts of Islam. It is a time of being very close to Allah–when humans immerse themselves in prayer and dhikr. The etymology of the term “Itikaf” is to reside and signifies to reside in any place and, in Islamic practice, to stay at the mosque for a set time for worship. During this time, they do away with worldly distractions, focusing solely on their bond with Allah. They do not leave their place of worship except for essential needs, like going to the toilet or making Wudu.

This most commonly occurs in the last ten days of Ramadan. These days are particularly blessed because they encompass Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, which is better than a thousand months—our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Itikaf every year in the month of Ramadan and also encouraged his companions and followers. Muslims do Itikaf to ask for forgiveness, clean their hearts, and strengthen their faith. It is a period of self-reflection, spiritual development, and closer submission to Allah.

Itikaf helps remind the believer of the temporal nature of this world and how one should focus on the hereafter. It allows faithful individuals to disconnect from worldly distractions, restore their faith, and understand their relationship with their Creator. Itikaf is a rewarding but brief practice, be it for ten days or a lesser period, that, in its sincere observance, brings peace and blessing to the diligent practitioner.

Let them do it whenever they want; it is unnecessary to finish in 10 days.
  • Wajib Itikaf: When a person vows (Nazr) to do Itikaf, it becomes obligatory on him. The importance of this night is mentioned in Surah Al-Qadr (Chapter 97 of the Quran):
إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ ۝1
(“Indeed, We sent the Quran down during the Night of Decree.”)

(“And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?”)
(“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”)
(“The angels and the Spirit [Jibreel] descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.”)
(“Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.”)
