Five Pillars of Islam:
There are Five Pillars of Islam in which Muslims practice their religion:
1. Believe in one God (Allah).
2. Pray five times a day.
3. Give to charity (help others).
4. Fast (not eat or drink) during Ramadan.
5. Go on a trip to Mecca (called Hajj) if they can.
These actions help Muslims stay close to Allah and live good lives.
Understanding Teaching of Islam
Islam is a monotheistic faith that holds that there is only one God who must be worshiped (called Allah in Arabic). Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad received messages from Allah through the angel Gabriel (Quran). The Quran is a book of messages written to show Muslims how to live well and act with kindness.
Islam likewise teaches Muslims to follow the Sunnah, which Prophet Muhammad said and did. Islam teaches three beliefs: People should believe in Allah, follow His orders, live peacefully, and be kind.
Course Structure
Who Are Muslims?
Islam — the religion, Muslims — people who follow Islam. They worship One God, known as Allah, and believe that Prophet Muhammad is the last of all messengers sent by Allah. Islam is observed through the Quran and the way of Prophet Muhammad.
As a believer, I know that Muslims do not all come from the same country but believe in the same. When practicing Islam, they follow the Five Pillars:
- Believing in one God
- Praying every day
- Helping others
- Fasting during Ramadan
- Going to Mecca if they can
Muslims also attempt to act according to Islamic teachings, which advise us to be friendly, honest, and respectful toward everyone else. These values inform their actions each day.
The Five fundamentals of Islamic faith:
Our Islamic Studies course starts with the Five Pillars of Islam. These pillars are five acts of worship that define the fundamentals of Islamic faith in Allah. They are the pillars of a Muslim’s life; because of those pillars, everyone’s acts of worship and day-to-day lives spring. This course will teach you about these pillars and why they are so critical.

1. Shahada (Faith):
The first and most fundamental dimension, the Shahada, is simple in its message: “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.” A Muslim who says this and believes it is a Muslim. The first pillar calls upon us to believe in one God, Allah, and the Prophet Muhammad, which makes up the Shahada.
Believing in Allah (God)
Muslims believe in one God, Allah. Everything in the universe is Allah’s creation. He is the only true God with no partners or children. However, the most important part of being a Muslim is to believe in Allah. It means having confidence in His Love, power, wisdom, and mercy. Muslims believe that Allah sees, knows, and is always with them.
2. Salah (Prayer):
Salah is performed five times daily on specific occasions—dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and night. These prayers link Muslims to Allah throughout the day. Different prayers have specific physical gestures and recitations from the Quran. Through the prayer of Salah, Muslims love Allah and ask Him for forgiveness and for everything He has blessed us with.
3. Zakat (Charity) (Alms to The Needy):
The zakat is an Islamic rule that requires Muslims to give 2.5% of their surplus wealth each year to the poor or in need. It makes a Muslim’s money clean and helps everyone live better by sharing.
How to Give Zakat?
Check Your Money: Add up all your savings, gold, and valuable things.
Nisab Amount: Make sure your money is more than a set amount called “Nisab.”
Count Zakat: Take 2.5% of your extra money.
Help Others: Give it to poor people, needy families, or others Islam says to help.
Zakat shows love for Allah, helps others, and makes the world kinder.
4. Sawm (Fasting):
Muslims do not eat nor drink from dawn (before sunrise) until evening (sunset) during the month of Ramadan, a special period for them. Muslims fast to learn how to be good people and avoid bad things, like lying, fighting, or hurting others. The act teaches them to exercise self-control, experience the way poor people feel, and develop closeness to Allah. As such, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated at the end of Ramadan, a joyous event for Muslims thanking Allah for the strength shown throughout fasting.
5. Hajj (Pilgrimage):
Hajj is a special journey Muslims make to Mecca. They try to do this once if they are healthy and can afford it. During Hajj, Muslims do special prayers and actions to remember Prophet Ibrahim (Alay Salam). He showed great faith and obedience to Allah. By doing Hajj, Muslims keep their history alive and show devotion to Allah.
